why do waitresses get paid a wage, plus tips? i know that being able to earn more money by getting more tips is how waiting tables can actually be a lucrative job. but why cant they just earn, then, for each shift, either minimum wage or, if higher, what they earned in tips? that way they would have both a safety net, and the opportunity to earn extra money.
Ok, what you said was, “why do waitresses get paid a wage, plus tips?”
I am a waitress. I make 2.60 an hour, and then tips.
If my check comes out to less than what would have been minimum wage per hour worked, then my workplace has to just pay me minimum wage (they just pay whatever the difference is). However, that is very very rare.
Your statement was not only uninformed, but the phrasing was easily misunderstood. It read like, “Why do waitresses get paid a wage and tips, they should just get one or the other” which is really irritating because the wage we get really, truthfully, does not even cover the taxes on my check, especially because most days I have to claim cash tips that I did not even receive (where I work we have to claim 10% of whatever cash was paid to us and we don’t always actually get tipped as much as we have to claim). If what you meant was, “All waitresses should at least make minimum wage,” rest assured, that is exactly how it is supposed to work.
